VAGINAS AND MENOPAUSE

menopause

With the upcoming ‘ Sex, Mind, and Menopause’ Davina Mccall documentary on 2nd May, I wanted to talk about this very important subject.

Firstly I wanted to highlight how broad this topic is and there is so much to it and so many terms!! It can get so confusing!!!! Vaginismus..vaginitis..vulvodynia…atrophy…genitourinarysyndrome…irritation..burning…sore..too much discharge..not enough discharge..bladder pain..prolapse..Anyone else feel like the vagina needs a dictionary of its own 🙂

For many ladies, menopause and genital symptoms can impact on mental health, sex and relationships, social embarrassment, and reluctancy to have important health checks like cervical smears.

*WE NEED TO GET IT RIGHT*. As healthcare professionals we need to be asking the right questions. If treated early we can reverse any skin and structural changes which in turn can really improve quality of life.
There are so many treatments including topical oestrogen, moisturiser, lubricants, dilators, vibrators(yes that’s right, I said vibrators!!!), HRT, testosterone, and dont forget psychosexual treatments, CBT, psychotherapy,  PTSD treatments..the list goes on and on….

Have a look at my resources page
Berkshiremenopauseclinic.com/resources-1 where I’ve written patient leaflets including ‘treatments for vaginal and bladder symptoms’.
