HRT and Breast Cancer

HRT and Breast Cancer

Let’s talk HRT and breast cancer!.

*Did you know HRT is a PROMOTER not an INITIATOR*
This means that in those who develop breast cancer on HRT,it is likely they were always going to develop it but HRT just quickened the process of it growing.
Also the risk of breast cancer with HRT depends on the type of HRT, how you take it, and how long for. With so many HRT choices available,  this is something your menopause specialist or doctor can discuss with you and help you understand the safe choices available for your personalised situation.

*Lifestyle plays a big part!*

When counselling patients on the risks of HRT, a lot of patients are not aware that you are more likely to develop breast cancer from certain lifestyle choices such as smoking; excess alcohol; lack of exercise (see picture- taken from ‘Women’s health concerns’ website). As part of a holistic approach to menopause care, it is really important to look together at any lifestyle modifications that may help with both physical and mental well being through the menopause journey.

*What if you are high risk of developing breast cancer or have had breast cancer in the past*

In some women, HRT may not be the right choice. For example those with a very strong family history or previous breast cancer. There are many alternative options. However, some women who develop breast cancer really are suffering with menopausal symptoms. This can be worsened by some of the treatments or surgeries. Interestingly, in those with previous breast cancer who feel they want to take HRT due to poor quality of life, they are more likely to have breast cancer diagnosed earlier than those not on HRT as they are more breast aware and likely to have regular breast checks.
Everyone can do a self breast examination, its really easy. I often show my patients how to do a proper breast exam for the first time to give them confidence to do it themselves at home.

If breast cancer is something that worries you, talk to our specialist at Berkshire Menopause Clinic. We are here to help.
