Our Coils, Implants and All Other Women’s Health Clinic Service FAQs

What is a coil and how does it work?

A coil (IUD/IUS) is a small device placed in the womb that provides long-acting contraception and can also be used for heavy or painful periods, as part of Hormone Replacement Therapy.
There are two main types:

  • Copper coils (non-hormonal): Effective contraception without hormones, though periods may become heavier.
  • Hormonal coils (Mirena®, Jaydess®, Kyleena®): Release a small amount of progestogen. Depending on the type, they can be used for contraception, heavy or painful periods, and sometimes used as part of HRT.

At your appointment, our specialist will discuss your options, explain the fitting process, and answer any questions to ensure you feel comfortable.

You can read more about coils in our patient leaflet.

Can I have a coil fitted as part of HRT or for a hormonal imbalance?

Yes. Coils can be used not only for contraception but also as part of HRT or to help manage hormonal imbalance and heavy periods. Your treatment will be tailored to your individual needs.

What is a contraceptive implant?

A contraceptive implant is a small device placed under the skin of your upper arm to provide long-acting hormonal contraception for up to 3 years. At your appointment, our specialist will explain the procedure, benefits, and any potential side effects.

How do I know which option is right for me?

To ensure you get the right care, its best to first book an Introductory consultation, where we can discuss your medical history, lifestyle, and personal preferences, and explore all available options — whether its contraception or prolapse management — so you feel confident and informed about your choice. You can book an Introductory Consultation here.

Do I need follow-up appointments?

You do not necessarily need follow ups. Our specialist will explain when and how reviews are scheduled. We offer to share care with your GP and send a summary letter to them, should you wish to continue care on the NHS.
