Dr Shilpa McQuillan Dedicated Women's Health Clinic Specialist

Cervical Screening Tests (‘Smears’)

A cervical screening ‘smear’ test is an important part of looking after your health, helping to detect any early changes that could lead to cervical cancer. We understand it can feel a little daunting, and we’re here to make the experience as calm and comfortable as possible.

As an experienced Community Gynaecologist and Women’s Health GP, Dr McQuillan brings the expertise and reassurance to support women, including those who’ve experienced difficult or previously unsuccessful cervical screening tests.

We can also talk about cervical screening ‘smear’ tests during your consultation and offer practical advice on how to make the process easier and more comfortable—especially if you’ve had a difficult experience in the past.

Your comfort, privacy, and peace of mind always come first.

— FAQs

Do I need a referral for cervical screening?

No referral is needed—you can book directly with us by phone or email.

I’ve had a difficult cervical screening experience before – can you help?

Yes. Dr McQuillan, our lead specialist, has extensive experience supporting women who have found previous screenings uncomfortable or challenging. We’ll take the time to make the process as calm and comfortable as possible.

Are these appointments the same as a consultation?

No, cervical screening appointments are focused tests and assessments. If you’d like to discuss your wider health, medical history, or symptoms in detail, we recommend booking a consultation alongside.

Where are these appointments carried out?

All appointments are in-person at our Henley-on-Thames clinic, in a calm and confidential setting.

What happens if my test or examination shows something of concern?

If your cervical screening or vaginal examination picks up any changes or concerns, we’ll talk everything through with you clearly and sensitively. We can provide a referral for private specialist care, or—if you prefer—write to your NHS GP so you can continue your care through the NHS. Whatever the next step, we’ll make sure you fully understand your options and feel supported throughout.

Our Henley-on-Thames Clinic is conveniently accessible to providing specialist women’s healthcare across Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire.
